A Smile is Worth a Thousand Words

tooth extractionDental health is no joke. Millions of Americans are afraid to go to their family dentist and millions more are horrified by the thought of needing a tooth extraction. The average person in the U.S. waits three years between dental appointments despite the dentist telling you that he or she wants to see you once every six months. Going to the dentist has a reputation for being painful and unpleasant, but it’s a necessary evil.

A whole 96% of people say that an attractive smile makes someone more appealing to the opposite sex. That matters. Whether we like it or not, people care about how other people look. Furthermore, people care about their own looks. Almost one-third of people say they are “concerned by the look of their teeth.” So what do we do with this information?

The answer is simple, even if it’s no fun to hear: Take care of your teeth. Cavities, plaque build-up, sensitive teeth – these things happen, but they need to be addressed. If they’re not, you’re putting your future at risk; people gotta eat, after all, and if you’ve ever tried eating without chewing, you likely know that teeth are important.

While some might think it’s bad enough to just go to the dentist for a regular cleaning, what happens when things go terribly wrong? When you have a dental emergency, how do you bounce back from that? If you need a tooth extraction or a root canal, what happens to your smile in the future?

Cosmetic dentistry, that’s what happens. Cosmetic dentistry is an entire industry dedicated to helping people feel better about their smile. Cosmetic dentistry procedures range from teeth-whitening to tooth extractions to replacement of broken teeth and cover just about everything in between. Some people think they’re opposed to the idea of cosmetic surgery and dentistry, but it’s a simple matter of wanting to improve.

There’s minimal difference (other than cost) between using a whitening toothpaste for months and having a whitening procedure done – the effect is the same, the path to get there is different. Of course, for more serious work, like a tooth extraction (a fancy name for having a tooth pulled), you don’t have a lot of options beyond getting that tooth yanked out of your mouth.

Your teeth are among the first things people see when you meet them. Your smile could be the difference between getting a job and not or between meeting a stranger and meeting your future spouse.
