The average number of missing teeth in Canada is almost three teeth per person in the whole country. Though we’ve come a long way in terms of education and in advances in dental care, about 6% of Canadians are actually missing all of their teeth. Though cosmetic dentistry is a good option for those who need replacement teeth (like dental implants), there are things every individual can do to avoid having to pay high cosmetic dentistry prices later in life. One of the best things you can do to prevent tooth decay is practicing good oral hygiene. Here are three mistakes you’re probably making, that you should avoid (so as to avoid having to find a cosmetic dentist as well).
Using the wrong toothbrush
If you’re using the wrong toothbrush, you might not be getting your teeth as clean and they should be. Using a toothbrush that is too large for your mouth — meaning that you can’t brush the tight, hard to reach areas around your molars — you’re probably leaving bits of food and plaque behind. Dentists also recommend using a soft bristled toothbrush for removing plaque, since they are able to bend gently into crevices between teeth and against the gumline.
Not brushing correctly
Another oral hygiene mistake you’re probably making is simply not brushing your teeth properly which, again, can leave behind food and plaque. Since most people brush their teeth everyday, it can be easy to slip into bad habits like not brushing long enough or thoroughly enough. You should brush your teeth for at least a full two minutes and be sure to get behind and in front of all of your teeth.
Not flossing or using mouth wash
Another big mistake people make when it comes to their oral hygiene is not flossing or using mouth wash. You should floss before you brush, to loosen food and particles that will be more easily removed with a good brushing. After brushing, using an alcohol based mouth wash is a good way to rinse out all of the debris and germs you stirred up by flossing and brushing.
Not practicing good oral hygiene pretty much guarantees you’re going to have to look for dental implant specialists later in life. Do you have any other tips for good oral hygiene (or to find a cosmetic dentist if it’s too late)? Let us know in the comments. Links like this: www.studiobdental.ca
