There’s No Need to Be Afraid of Going to the Dentist

Partial dentures

Are you afraid of going to the dentist? You’re certainly not the only one. Pop culture has played dentistry up to be more a form of torture than a form of treatment.

Granted, dentistry is not the most glamorous, or the most exciting experience, for the patient. There is cleaning, and brushing, and picking, and spitting. There are also hands in your mouth, needles, and even the dreaded drills.

However, the dentist chair is not the torture chamber you imagine it to be. There have been advances in technology and procedure that are all designed to make the patient more comfortable. For example, arguably the worst thing about the drill is the noise, right? Well, manufacturers have taken that into account, and have developed quieter drills, that are not quite so intimidating.

Also, you’re not going to feel a thing during your procedure, if you’re not supposed to. Your family dentist knows exactly how much to numb you for your procedure, to ensure that you don’t feel anything, but also that you are not numb for the rest of the day.

For those still feeling nervous, however, there is oral sedation dentistry. What is sedation dentistry? Sedation in dentistry allows you to be unconscious for your procedure, even just a filling or a tooth pulling, to ensure that you won’t feel a thing. All you have to do is drift off to sleep, and when you wake up, it will be all over.

Many with dental anxieties have turned to oral sedation dentistry

Dental anxiety is actually a pretty big problem, in that it can lead to much bigger problems. When someone is afraid of going to the dentist, they will often avoid their regular checkups for far longer than recommended, out of fear. But because htey’re avoiding their appointments, plaque is building up on their teeth and gums, along with bacteria, which leads to more serious dental problems.

In these cases, the patient will not visit the dentist until there is a very serious problem, causing a great deal of pain. Oftentimes, this will require more invasive procedures to treat or correct, which is what the patient was afraid of in the first place. If they had just come in for regular checkups, and toughed it out through a harmless cleaning, then they wouldn’t have developed these problems.

If you’re afraid of visiting the dentist, avoiding doing so could really be causing greater harm to your teeth. But if you give it a try, I think you’ll find that advances in technology, and oral sedation dentistry, make the experience much easier. Helpful info also found here.
